Derek Redmond and His Father

When I was in high school, my youth pastor, Mike Mobly loved sharing this story with us. We probably heard it 10+ times. Mike told it so well that I could almost picture the video in my mind.

The other day I came across a video that sort of recreated the moment and the circumstances surrounding this special story.

World-class sprinter Derek Redmond was set to run the race of his life and win a gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games. But before he could cross the finish line, he pulled a hamstring and was forced to fall back. As he hopped on one foot, his father left the stands and helped his son cross the finish line. Watch as this pair demonstrates the love and friendship of a father and son.

Do you have reasons NOT to go to church?

There are some reasons (maybe better put as excuses) that people have to not go to church. Not very good reasons, but they do have them:

Small Town Churches… Full of Opportunity!

Our lead pastor at Hayward Wesleyan, Mark Wilson, is a champion of small town church ministry. His calling is to encourage and resource small town pastors. Mark travels and speaks often to rural pastors and has a knack for understanding their situation (because he is in a small town) and seeks to “revitalize their church.”

Back in December, Mark shared an insightful post about Jesus being called to do small town ministry called: Jesus Was a Small Town Preacher.

Mark’s blog can be found @ Revitalize Your Church

Shout Out to Your Local Public Library

Kids and families rely and appreciate a good, local public library. It’s still a safe and respected place for children, teenagers, and adults to go read, study, do research, check email, etc.

March to the Manger | 2011

For the last 3 years Hayward Wesleyan Church has put on an experience during the Sunday morning service before Christmas called: March to the Manger.

March to the Manger includes a live nativity procession–shepherds and angels, Mary and Joseph and a baby Jesus, and wise men bearing gifts. The congregation is then invited to bring their gifts to Jesus. Gifts include money, things people want to give up, something sacrificial, etc.

It’s been a great tradition and a good continual discipline/practice for our church during the Christmas season.

Our Church Bell

When our church moved from its old location to the new one several years ago, the church bell came over as well but ended up in storage for a while. A special “bell” house was built between the church building and the highway to house the bell and keep it operational at designated times.

It’s funny, but a student the other day asked me what was in that thing (the bell house) and I told him, “A bell.” He asked if it worked, and I told him I had no idea. I think it did work at one time, but hadn’t heard it ring in a long time.

Well that question wound it’s way to the right people and they set to work to find out why the bell hasn’t rung in a while. Turns out the motor that rotates the bell when assigned was shot and needed to be replaced.

While they were fixing things the other day, I stopped over by the bell house to look inside as I had never seen inside nor the bell. It is huge! I had no idea a really cool, old, huge bell was inside. I had thought that it was a “wimpy” sort of bell, but this thing took a logging truck/rig to move and place it in its spot.

I was told that the bell has a date on it of 1906. Wow. That’s an old bell. I have a new-found respect for that weird looking bell house that sits on our property now.
