Spring Lock-In 2012 | Schedule of Events

This past weekend, over one hundred middle school students descended upon the Hayward Wesleyan Church for the Spring Lock-In. I don’t know why they like doing this?!

In order to organizationally survive 10 hours with middle school students, one needs to have a comprehensive plan for the time allotted. Preferably there needs to be more activities planned that one has time for, which turned out to be good for us this time. We didn’t run out of things to do, but because of the number of students that attended, we had to not do certain activities that we had previously planned.

Here is the run-down of the events of the evening:

What Does Your “Easter Eggstravaganza” Look Like?

I’m often asked by other churches or children’s ministry leaders what we do for an outreach during Easter and how we do it. Here’s my typical answer:

Easter Eggstravaganza

The Easter Eggstravaganza starts @ 11am on the Saturday before Easter. Everyone starts in the sanctuary where we put on a brief program for the kids and their parents:

  • Our lead pastor sings some goofy songs on his guitar (which he is great at!!).
  • Then I share a story about the “Jesus of Easter” as a certain character (in the past I’ve done Peter, Roman Centurion, thief on the cross, an angel like Arnold Schwarzenegger…)
  • Then we separate the crowd into two groups for the egg hunt part: typically infants thru kindergarten as one group, then first thru grade 5-ish.

We have two separate areas for them to collect eggs–one for the younger (often inside if the weather is questionable, outside if the weather is exceptional) and one for the older (always outside… piles of snow and all sometimes!).

Every year we add more and more eggs. I think we’re up to around 6,000 eggs or so now! I have middle school students help me stuff eggs prior to the day (an annual tradition) as well as help spread them in the two areas on the morning of the event.

The egg hunt goes pretty quickly.

Then we have popcorn and juice in the gym for the participants to eat while they are counting their booty. We ask people to turn their plastic eggs back in so we can keep increasing the total from year to year (but that’s voluntary). This is a good time for me to walk around and meet people that I haven’t met before.

That’s it. Really simple. We require the parents to come with their kids. We have a start time, but no end time, because it might be done early, or it might be done late. Things tend to wind down around 11:45am.

We keep the programming time really short and engaging because the program is between them and the egg hunt, so we keep that in mind so we don’t frustrate parents or the kids unecessarily.

People love it! Especially the story part! We typically have around 500 people (kids and their families).

Christmas Story Retold LIVE @ Junior Followers

On Monday, December 12, 2011, I “retold” the Christmas story in LIVE action with the students @ the Junior Followers Christmas Party.

It was a lot of fun for the students to play Mary and Joseph, baby Jesus, shepherds and angels, animals, and wise men.

In my experience, doing this kind of storytelling with children really helps to cement the details of the story as well as engage their imaginations and involvement!

Copper Falls Hiking Adventure | Fall 2011

On Sunday, October 16, we took the Followers students and most of their families on a bus ride to Copper Falls State Park in Mellen, WI. It was a beautiful, sunny fall day and the students had a blast hiking and exploring.

Their favorite thing seemed to be dumping HUGE rocks off the bridge!

Trunk or Treat | 2011

Another successful year of “Trunk or Treating” @ Hayward Wesleyan! We topped last year’s numbers by about 30 candy-goers. Our “official” count was somewhere around 1050 students (not counting their parents in tow!).

We repeated the same location and traffic flow as last year. In order to contain the large line of people, we wound them through our long hallway and out the back entrance to the church into the back parking lot where all the cars and trunks were located.

There seemed to be a more excited and anticipatory buzz among the trunk volunteers this year. I don’t know why, nor do I have anything specific to pin my sense on… it just made things really enjoyable!

Last year we ran out of candy. This year we did not. I attribute our preparedness to our early candy donation push. For whatever reason, we didn’t ask for candy donations until really late last year. Thus our stash that supplements our trunk volunteers was not able to keep up with demand! This year, we got the candy donation announcements in really early (like the first Sunday in October), which allowed for 5 weeks worth of candy donations. We ended up with a half-bin of candy leftover, which is just amazing considering how much candy we went through that evening! And I didn’t have to scurry over to Walmart and drop hundreds of $$ on candy!

In addition to the early candy donation push, we had a great return of trunk volunteers from last year. Several families have been involved since we began back in 2006, but many new families have since joined this annual tradition. We had a couple of new trunk participants and they were just plain shocked how much candy they went through and how unprepared they were!

Really, really good times!

Trunk or Treat 2011 Promo (video)

Every year on Halloween, hwc Youth ministries pulls off an event called Trunk or Treat. About 4 years ago I had my 1st grade Sunday morning class help me make a video promo for that event. This year, I decided to “refresh” that old video and use it as the promo video for this year!

Memories | Kids Camp 2011 (video)

Jessie is a high school student who has helped out for years @ Kids Camp in the Crafts arena. She took some great pictures over the week of Kids Camp 2011 that we used to show the campers on the last morning of camp.

Thursday @ Kids Camp 2011 (video)

In light of “rainy” Wednesday, Thursday @ Kids Camp 2011 was incredible. It turned out to be a cool day so we didn’t do Water Wars in the morning like we had planned, but we ended up in the rec field and Mr. Dixon led the campers in Pom-Pom Pull-Away, Mob Tag, and a couple of Noodle Races. We still pulled out the Slip -n- Slide for those die-hard swimming fans!

Thursday evening we did the Dodgeball Tournament and Campfire w/ Smores (always a hit)! John cabin dominated the boys and Eve cabin won the girls, and John cabin won the showdown between the girls and the boys! Then John cabin went on to beat the staff (with a little help from me turning things in their favor… JAILBREAK!).

Talent Show @ Kids Camp 2011 (videos)

Normally we do the Kids Camp Talent Show on Thursday night, but due to the rain we moved it up to Wednesday night. The students always seem to pull out funny and off the wall acts and performances. We were able to catch most of them on video. Enjoy!

Pig Sweaking
Laik R. performs his lifelong dream!

Keys to the Kingdom DANCE
Brady C. wows the crowd with an impressive dance number!

I’m a Little Tea Pot RAP
Suzanne F. and Laik R. bring a new twist on an old song.

Plastic Cup Ping Pong
Cody and Zak play a round of invisible ping pong on stage!

You Are My All in All
Lindsay and her cabin sing a song on the guitar and do some motions.

Oboe Solo

Leg Flexibility Tricks
Gabe K. shares a very “flexible” talent!

The Invisible Bench Skit
An invisible bench makes an “appearance”!

Dropped Skit
I don’t know the name of the skit, but a girl gets “dropped” in it!

Awesome God
Lindsay plays the guitar and some campers sing and share some motions to “Awesome God”.

Wednesday @ Kids Camp 2011 (video)

Wednesday @ Kids Camp 2011 turned out to be rainy, yet fun. I guess it’s required “surprise” programming for any camping experience!
